Upcycled & Reverse Tie Dye

I opted against wearing my beanie for once and immediately regretted it as soon as I walked outside.

I did however wear these boots again. They're my go-to babies that will probably bite the dust soon.

I bet it's funny to see me walking around campus, sliding about, trying not to slip out of my boots.

Too bad it's so expensive to get them fixed! Then again, I think they're beyond fixing. Sadness!

Anyways, onto this scarf of mine. Last season, the infinity scarves were all the rage. I remembered seeing one on American Apparel and realizing that I could make it easily for a fraction of the cost.

I stocked up on t-shirts in sizes 3X, 4X, etc. The bigger, the better. I simply cut the shirt straight across underneath the armpits. The fun part was stretching out the loop of fabric. Anyways, I wore them a few times and dismissed them. This year, I decided to treat one with reverse tie dye. I randomly rubber-banded it, like you would with regular tie-dye projects. Afterwards, I soaked it in a mixture of diluted bleach until it turned a color I liked. The original scarf was navy. It's now a rosy brown color with traces of the navy in the veins. This is a super easy and fun project.

So fun, in fact, I decided to wear it hooded a la Lady Gaga. 

Don't worry, I didn't actually walk around campus like this. 

I figured it would make for a fun photo.

Please don't take me seriously. I don't take me seriously.

OH! I should be updating my Etsy tonight with some new shoes and handbags.

Rainy Day Activities

 I woke up late to a dismal rainy day. 

Despite the gloomy weather, I am looking forward to staying in and getting some stuff done. 

Namely, a much needed Etsy update, some alterations for Samson's Bean, and hopefully some crafts. 

Now, these pictures are from a late night craft frenzy a couple of nights ago, 

but they capture the same atmosphere that I'm trying to recreate today.

 I always come across nice, but otherwise boring, clutches when I'm frequenting the thrift haunts. 

I thought it'd be fun to doodle on one and color it in using some nail polish.

I need to find better paints! Anyone have any suggestions?

Other than that, I thought this was a fun way to rejuvenate someone's castoffs into someone else's treasure!

Burned Out.

Finals week is well underway, which would explain why my attempts at outfit posts have been thwarted. 

Anywhooo, here's a lil' sumfin sumfin that I've been working on for my 3D class.

It seriously took me over 6 hours. I blame all of the miniatures!

 The project is based on the works by American assemblage sculptor Joseph Cornell.

I chose the rather strange and morbid theme of Spontaneous Human Combustion.

 Materials were sourced from all of my favorite thrift haunts as well as my junky craft stash.

I admit the chair looks a little wonky, but I was getting really tired and apathetic.

 I made the vase from a plastic cap I stole from one of my little sister's bottles of body mist.

Wrapped in hemp and sitting atop a periwinkle button, its flowers are beads and feathers from my collection of crafting nonsense. I knew there was I reason why I hoard knickknacks.

 Barbie's limbs were sliced off a la Dexter and charred over an open flame. Speaking of flames, I almost set my family's kitchen on fire creating my "charred remains." We won't discuss that I was standing right next to the sink. 

(I was too captivated by the leaping flames, does this make me a pyro?!)

Though I chose this topic for it morbidity and potential for controversy, I began to relate to my charred specimen. 

It has been a rough semester, both academically and personally.

However, I've done my best to maintain my positive outlook.

I hope my placing of her charred limbs reflect that.

The madness of this semester will officially be over tomorrow at noon!

Pending Alterations

After a 50-minute long Spanish exam this morning, I am finally free to do as I please.

Not really though, I'm currently cringing at my lengthy To-Do (Or Die) List.

Before tackling that bad boy, I hope I can procrastinate by doing some long-awaited alterations.

This is what I pulled out from my closet, I'm sure there's more lurking around.

It's mainly hemming and mending and button-swapping.

Literal Netbook Sleeve

I had convinced myself that I wouldn't...but I did. I gave in and bought myself a netbook for my trip to Spain. I wanted a cute sleeve for it but couldn't find anything under 20 bucks that wasn't black and I also didn't feel like spending any more cash. I really ought to get my spending under control! The knit comes from this cardigan I thrifted from Goodwill ages ago. I wore it and eventually decided the fit was off so I took scissors to it and saved it in my scrap bin for future use. It took over a year. Whoops!

Here's the cutesy lil' netbook. It's black. I typically like for my gadgets to be black, choosing to customize them with cool accessories. I get to avoid the commitment of a crazy color choice that I may later regret.

The netbook is so small, I could easily stretch it into a sleeve from the cardigan. 

Hence, the Literal Netbook Sleeve. 

Man, the contrast of technology to the knit makes me way too excited. 

It appeals to both my nerdy and artsy sides. Who says you can't have it both ways?

The entire project took less than 30 minutes from start to finish. I pinned the sweater and used my machine to sew up on end and left the other open so I could slip in the netbook, of course!

This elastic was salvaged from some shirt and still had the snipped strings hanging off from it where I had seamed-ripped it away. Attaching it to a safety-pin makes it that much easier to thread through the path I created for it. 

This way, the opening can stretch to accommodate the netbook and close in around it, 

to prevent it from slipping out in some freak of nature accident. 

Here you can see what I'm talking about. It looks like my Literal Netbook Sleeve has a red-lipped mouth! 

Haha, adding googley eyes would be a bit much, but I can't help but laugh as I seriously consider it.

The finished product: The Literal Netbook Sleeve.

Cost: Nothing. I had all the supplies on hand.

OH! I also whipped up this matching cozy for my water bottle to soak up the sweat if my drink's too cold. 

It's wonderful to upcycle and find new life for discarded items. 

Plus, it costs nothing and it's completely original! The sleeve could probably use some interfacing to provide extra protection, 

but I don't exactly plan to bang my netbook around like a crazed rockstar smashing his guitar onstage in a fit of testosterone. 

I just want to avoid scratching up my new toy.

I head to the land o' the Sexy Spaniards in 3 days!
